Welcome to Jeparit including Glenlee

Jeparit is well-known as the birth-place of Sir Robert Menzies. The town was gazetted in 1889 as ‘Jeparit’, from an Aboriginal word said to mean ‘home of small birds’.

Here the Wimmera River meets Lake Hindmarsh with 13kms of graveled walking track meandering along the banks of the Wimmera River and looping around town. Explore Settlement history and step back in time at the Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum.

25km south west of Jeparit is the Glenlee Flora and Fauna Reserve.

Jeparit offers fantastic camping, boating, bird watching and fishing at Lake Hindmarsh and the Wimmera River.

  • Four Mile Beach Camping Ground

Located on Victoria’s largest natural freshwater lake, Four Mile Beach is pet friendly and offers powered and unpowered sites.  A kiosk and excellently maintained toilet and shower facilities are also available during peak times.

  • Hopetoun House Hotel

Stay with us in friendly and comfortable accommodation while you visit all that Jeparit and the surrounding area has to offer.

  • Lake Hindmarsh

See above entries for camp grounds around Lake Hindmarsh

  • Outlet Creek

Outlet Creek and the sand dunes north of the lake can be explored on short day walks or longer overnight expeditions. The park is also popular for water skiing, fishing, yabbying and boating when water levels are high enough.

  • Picnic Point Beach Camping Area

Picnic Point Beach, which lies just north of where the Wimmera River empties into Lake Hindmarsh, is a good place for some solitude. From the Nhill–Jeparit Rd, detour onto unsealed Lake Rd, which runs up along the eastern shoreline, and then take the track to Picnic Point.  Access is restricted to dry weather conditions.

  • Schulzes Beach Camping Area

This campground is located on the western shore of Lake Hindmarsh, where it has some impressive red river gums for company.  You can reach Schulzes Beach from the Nhill–Rainbow Rd.

  • Sir Robert Menzies Caravan Park

Situated next to the Wimmera River and local sporting facilities there is plenty to see and do. Both powered and unpowered sites are available.

  • The Wattles Camping Area

After skirting the western edge of Lake Hindmarsh, the Nhill–Rainbow Rd crosses over Outlet Creek, heading east. It’s here, at the northern foreshore of the lake, that you’ll find the track leading down to The Wattles. There’s dry weather access only, so check conditions with Parks Victoria. Campfires can be lit using the lake reserve’s dead wood, but fuel stoves are preferred here.

  • Williamsons Beach Camping Area

Just off the Nhill–Rainbow Rd, at the northern tip of Lake Hindmarsh, is this serene campground. Note the lack of facilities here, and that the access road is sometimes inaccessible after rain; check before you visit. Adjacent Birdcage Flora and Fauna Reserve swaps river red gums for yellow gum and cypress pine woodlands.
