Wimmera Mallee Itineraries: 50 Road Trips, Hikes, Walks & Bike Routes

50 fully-mapped itineraries for the Wimmera Mallee — road trips, summit hikes, walking trails and cycling routes — with distances, drive times, surface notes, fuel stops, mobile coverage and accommodation pointers for each. Built and verified by our team on the ground. None of this is generic “must-see” copy. Every itinerary has been driven, walked or pedalled by someone with a Wimmera postcode.

What Visit Victoria’s official itinerary undersells: the practical detail. How far is it actually? How many hours of light do you have? Where does mobile reception drop out? Where’s the next fuel after Patchewollock? This is the index page — pick the format that matches your trip and click through.

How we built these itineraries

Every itinerary has been driven, walked or pedalled by a member of our team in the last 18 months. Distances are verified against Google Maps and against the V/Line route planner where public transport is relevant. Mobile coverage notes come from the Wimmera Telecommunications Action Group’s 2025 black-spot map. Fuel-stop notes are confirmed against the operators’ published opening hours. Track conditions on national park walks are checked against the current Parks Victoria alerts before publication.

If a road, track, café or attraction changes — and they do — please email Tess at [email protected] and she’ll have the page updated within a week.

Practical planning

  • Mobile coverage drops between Patchewollock and Sea Lake, in Big Desert Wilderness Park, and in parts of Wyperfeld. Download offline maps before you leave Horsham or Hopetoun.
  • Fuel — top up at Horsham, Warracknabeal, Hopetoun, Sea Lake or Wycheproof. Roadhouses between are weekend-hours only.
  • Water — carry 3L per person per day on any hike. Mallee summer heat is unforgiving.
  • Park alerts — check Parks Victoria the morning of any hike for fire-day or track closures.
  • Visitor centres — our VIC index lists every staffed centre. Horsham and Sea Lake are 7 days; the others are weekdays.
