McKenzie Falls Base Hike
The McKenzie Falls base track — 1.9km return, 230 steps down into the gorge, the only way to see Victoria’s biggest waterfall from the bottom. Strong leg-day. Not pram or wheelchair accessible. Astonishingly photogenic when the flow is up.

|---|---|
| Time | 60–75 min |
| Elevation | ~70m down then up; 230 steps |

| Best time | July–November after rain |
| Start | McKenzie Falls car park (signposted on Mt Victory Road) |
The track
From the McKenzie Falls car park (free, large, with toilets), follow the sealed sign-posted path toward the falls. After 200m the path forks — left to the Bluff Lookout (the 500m sealed accessible top view), right and down to the base. The base path is fully constructed — sandstone steps, handrails on the steeper sections, several landings where you can rest. The descent is 230 steps. Allow 30 minutes down at an unhurried pace.
What you see at the base
A 35m three-tier waterfall plunging into a deep dark pool. Best photography position is the rocks on the river-right side, where you get the whole drop in frame. The mist from the falls is heavy in winter — bring a rain shell or a lens cloth.
Safety
No swimming. There have been fatal incidents from people slipping into the pool or being washed downstream. Rangers issue infringement notices. The pool’s depth, the cold water, and the unmarked underwater rocks make this one of the deceptively dangerous spots in the Grampians.
Return
The climb out is a steady 30–35 minutes. Take it slow on the steepest section near the top. There is one bench landing two-thirds up.
Best time of day
Early morning (before 10am) for the best light at the base and to beat the queues at the top. In peak season (Sept–Nov) the car park fills by 11am.
What to bring
1L water minimum, closed shoes (the stairs are wet much of the year), light rain layer, camera with a wider-angle lens.
