Buloke Visitor Information Centre (Wycheproof)

The Buloke Visitor Information Centre at 367 Broadway, Wycheproof, is the council’s southern hub for visitor advice across Buloke Shire — Wycheproof, Donald, Charlton, Sea Lake, Birchip and Culgoa. It’s open during council business hours, Monday to Friday, and run by the council’s customer service team rather than tourism specialists. That said, the information stocked is current, and the volunteers at the adjacent Wycheproof Community Resource Centre often pop over to help when traffic is heavier.

Liam from our team uses this centre when crossing from Mallee Highway to the Calder. It’s the place to get current Mt Wycheproof information and the Buloke Shire visitor map.

What you can do here

  • Get current information on Mt Wycheproof — the world’s smallest registered mountain, 43m above the surrounding plain.
  • Ask about the Wycheproof Op-Shop schedule (a local highlight that supports community programs).
  • Get current information on Lake Tyrrell access (Sea Lake’s VIC is the better source but the Wycheproof staff can update you when Sea Lake is closed).
  • Get Donald and Charlton itinerary advice — both 30–45 min from Wycheproof.

Mt Wycheproof — the world’s smallest mountain

Mt Wycheproof sits immediately west of the town, registered officially as a mountain (just) at 148m above sea level, 43m above the surrounding plain. There’s a sealed access road to the summit, a short walking track, panoramic views over flat farmland in every direction, and a permanent plaque marking the world-record status. The annual King of the Mountain foot-race is a local event — 1km from base to summit with a 60kg bag of wheat on the runners’ shoulders.

What’s nearby

  • Mt Wycheproof — 2 min west of the centre.
  • Sea Lake / Lake Tyrrell — 30 min north.
  • Charlton — 35 min south.
  • Donald — 45 min south-west.
  • Birchip / Birchip’s Mallee Bull statue — 25 min west.
  • Patchewollock silo — 1hr 15 min west.

When to visit

The centre runs council business hours only. If you need staffed advice on a weekend, the Sea Lake Visitor Hub (30 min north) is open 7 days. The Wycheproof Community Resource Centre is also worth a stop — staff there will help with local advice outside council hours, subject to availability.

Accessibility

Step-free entrance from Broadway. Accessible parking on Broadway. Accessible public toilet across the road in the central park, signposted.

Caravans, motorhomes and coaches

Free RV-friendly overnight camping is available at the Wycheproof Showgrounds, 1km south of the centre, with basic toilets and a dump point. Broadway angle parking accommodates standard vehicles only; longer rigs should park at the showgrounds and walk back.
