4-Day Lake Tyrrell Astrotourism Road Trip

Four days built around Lake Tyrrell — Victoria’s biggest salt lake, one of the darkest skies in southern Australia, and the country’s most photographed astrotourism destination. 480km loop from Melbourne, with two nights in Sea Lake for night-photography and reflection sessions.

Day 1 — Melbourne to Sea Lake (370km, 4hr 15min)

Drive direct via Bendigo and Charlton. Arrive Sea Lake mid-afternoon. Check in at Royal Hotel Sea Lake or the caravan park. Late-afternoon recon to Lake Tyrrell (7km north). Visit the Sea Lake VIC for the day’s crust report.

Day 2 — Lake Tyrrell sunrise + town + sunset (40km)

Pre-dawn departure (5am in summer, 6:30am in winter) to Lake Tyrrell for sunrise mirror shot. Breakfast back in Sea Lake. Late morning: Sea Lake silo art (Travis Vinson) walking distance from town. Lunch. Afternoon: edit photos / sleep. Sunset at Lake Tyrrell. Sleep Sea Lake.

Day 3 — Milky Way night + day-trip Wycheproof (60km)

If it’s a new moon: Milky Way photography at Lake Tyrrell from 10pm. Day-time: drive 30 min south to Mt Wycheproof (world’s smallest mountain), 1km summit walk. Lunch in Wycheproof. Afternoon: book a guided astrotourism tour through one of the Sea Lake operators (the VIC has the current list). Sleep Sea Lake.

Day 4 — Sea Lake to Melbourne (430km)

Drive south via Charlton and Bendigo.

What to bring

Tripod, head torch (red-light mode), warm layers (3°C nights even in spring), 3L water per person, vehicle blanket for camera dew.
