7-Day Wimmera Mallee Silo Art Trail Loop

Seven days, roughly 800km on sealed roads, and every single one of the official Silo Art Trail murals. This is our team’s recommended way to do the trail properly — north-bound first so the morning sun is on the murals, with sensible stretches between stops and time for the deep stops (Murtoa Stick Shed, Lake Tyrrell at dawn) rather than a frantic dash.

Distance ~800km, sealed except 2km of gravel at Brim
Days 7
Difficulty Easy driving; long days possible if compressed to 5
Vehicle Any. Caravans fine on all routes.
Best time April–May or September–November
Start Horsham

Day 1 — Horsham to Murtoa (35km)

Late-morning arrival in Horsham. Start at the Horsham & Grampians VIC to pick up the official Silo Art Trail map. Lunch in Horsham. Drive 30 min east to Murtoa; spend the afternoon at the Stick Shed (cathedral-style heritage-listed grain shed; one of the most extraordinary buildings in regional Victoria). Sleep at the Murtoa Hotel or push 35 min north to Warracknabeal.

Day 2 — Warracknabeal, Brim, Sheep Hills (90km)

Warracknabeal first: Art Deco Heritage Walk (1.5km, brochure at the VIC). Drive 15 min north to Brim — Guido van Helten’s farmers, the silo art that started everything in 2016. Then 20 min east to Sheep Hills — Adnate’s Wergaia and Wotjobaluk Elders. Late afternoon back to Warracknabeal for the night.

Day 3 — Rosebery, Patchewollock, Lascelles (140km)

North on the Henty Highway. Rosebery (Kaff-eine’s farmer and dog), then Patchewollock (Fintan Magee’s Nick Hulland — the trail’s local favourite). Lunch in Patchewollock (the Patchewollock Hotel does a generous parma). Side-trip 25 min north to Lascelles — Rone’s portrait of Geoff and Merrilyn Horman. Sleep in Hopetoun for the night.

Day 4 — Lake Tyrrell + Sea Lake (130km)

East via Speed to Sea Lake. Visit the Sea Lake VIC for the morning’s salt-crust report. Drive 7km north to Lake Tyrrell. If conditions are right, plan to return at sunset for the mirror reflection. Sea Lake silo (Travis Vinson) is in town. Sleep Sea Lake.

Day 5 — Nullawil to Kaniva (250km)

Big driving day. Nullawil silo (Smug’s portrait), then south via Wycheproof (visit Mt Wycheproof, world’s smallest registered mountain). Lunch in Donald. Then west via Birchip and Beulah for the next batch of silos. Sleep in Kaniva.

Day 6 — Kaniva, Goroke, Edenhope (170km)

Morning at the Kaniva VIC + Sheep Art Trail walk. Lunch at Raine’s Café. South via Goroke (the Goroke Bakery sausage roll is mandatory) to Edenhope. Tour the 1878 Courthouse + Lake Wallace’s 1868 Aboriginal cricket team memorial. Sleep Edenhope.
