Hollow Mountain Ridge Hike
Hollow Mountain — 2.2km return up onto a long sandstone ridge with spectacular views and the namesake “hollow” cave near the summit. Short, sharp, photogenic.
| Distance | 2.2km return |
|---|---|
| Time | 75 min |
| Elevation | ~180m |
| Difficulty | Moderate; some scrambling |
| Best time | April–November |
| Start | Hollow Mountain car park (Mt Zero Road) |
The track
Steep from the off. The first 400m climbs through low mallee scrub to the start of the sandstone. From there it’s open slab walking with occasional rocky scrambling and yellow arrows marking the route. The “hollow” — a large overhanging cave — appears about 1km in; worth a 10-minute exploration.
The ridge views
The ridge above the hollow gives 270-degree views — Mt Stapylton to the north, the Wartook Valley to the south, the Wimmera plains stretching west. Aboriginal hand stencils are present in the area; respect interpretive signage and do not touch the rock art.
Safety
Some exposure on the upper ridge. Stay on the marked route. Sandstone is slippery when wet — avoid after rain.
What to bring
2L water, closed shoes, sun protection, camera.
