Mt Stapylton Summit Walk
Mt Stapylton — the northern tip of the Mt Difficult Range, 3.4km return, 220m climb, sandstone ridge walking with panoramic views across the western plains. One of the underrated short summits in the Grampians.
| Distance | 3.4km return |
|---|---|
| Time | 90 min |
| Elevation | ~220m climb |
| Difficulty | Moderate |
| Best time | April–November |
| Start | Mt Stapylton car park (signposted off Mt Zero Road) |
The track
The track starts on a clear gravel path through low mallee scrub for the first 600m. It then climbs into open sandstone slabs and ridge walking — the section that makes this hike special. There are some scrambly moments toward the summit but no exposed cliff edges. The ridge has loose grit; wear closed shoes.
The summit
The summit is a flat sandstone slab roughly 8m across with 360-degree views — west across the Wimmera farms to Mt Arapiles on a clear day, north to the silos at Brim, east into the heart of the Grampians, south toward Halls Gap.
Safety
Closed shoes essential. The sandstone is grippy when dry, slippery when wet. Do not attempt in rain or just after rain. No exposed cliff edges but stay back from the western lip for photos.
Best time of day
Late afternoon for sunset (allow 90 min for return + 30 min on summit). The western face catches glorious afternoon light.
What to bring
2L water in summer, 1L in winter, sun protection, head torch if descending in twilight.
