Wyperfeld Snowdrift Dunes Walk
The Snowdrift Dunes — vast expanses of bright orange-white sand in the heart of Wyperfeld National Park, 3km return walk from the Wonga Campground. One of the great underrated experiences in Victoria.
| Distance | 3km return |
|---|---|
| Time | 90 min |
| Elevation | Negligible (soft sand) |
| Difficulty | Moderate — sand is hard work |
| Best time | April–October (avoid summer heat) |
| Start | Wonga Campground, Wyperfeld National Park |
The track
From Wonga Campground, follow the signed track north. The first 400m is sandy track through mallee. You emerge into the dunes proper — soft white sand stretching to the horizon. Walking on the dunes is slow; allow extra time.
What you see
Open desert dunes in southern Australia, far from any beach. Excellent at sunset when the light raked across the sand creates long shadows. Photographers love this spot.
Safety
Summer heat is genuinely dangerous — daytime highs of 40°C+ are common. Walk only early morning or evening in summer. Carry 3L water minimum. Wear closed shoes — the sand becomes burning hot.
What to bring
3L water, sun protection, closed shoes, camera with wide-angle lens for the dune sweep.
Park alerts
Always check Parks Victoria the morning of your walk. Wyperfeld closes on extreme-fire-danger days.
