4-Day Wildflower Trail Road Trip (August to October)

Four days following the wildflower bloom across the Wimmera Mallee — Little Desert, Mt Arapiles, Big Desert and Wyperfeld — at the August through October sweet spot when the Mallee turns yellow, pink and purple.

Start Horsham

Day 1 — Horsham to Nhill via Little Desert (130km)

Drive south to Little Desert NP (Stringybark). Wildflower walk (Stringybark Loop, 4.5km flat — excellent for yellow billy buttons and mallee orchids). Lunch picnic. Continue west to Nhill. Sleep Nhill.

Day 2 — Nhill to Murrayville via Big Desert (150km)

North through Kaniva to the Big Desert Wilderness Park. Wyperfeld north entry. Bird and wildflower walking. 4WD recommended for inner tracks. Sleep Murrayville (caravan park) or back to Hopetoun.

Day 3 — Wyperfeld Snowdrift Dunes (110km)

South to Wonga Campground in Wyperfeld National Park. Snowdrift Dunes walk (3km return). Long-range silvereye, malleefowl and emu sightings in season. Sleep Hopetoun or Patchewollock.

Day 4 — Hopetoun to Horsham (130km)

South via Beulah and Warracknabeal back to Horsham.

Peak window varies year to year. Check Parks Victoria’s annual wildflower update from late July onwards. Best blooms typically Sept 1–Oct 15.
